The Solid Waste/Street Sweeping Division is responsible for the
collection and disposal of commercial and domestic refuse, green
waste and recyclables generated within the boundaries of the City.
This division provides bi-weekly service to residential accounts
and as required to commercial accounts. In addition to the regularly
scheduled service, a special haul service is provided, on request,
for hard to handle materials. Salvageable cardboard is collected
regularly throughout the commercial areas for recycling purposes
by licensed private contractors. Residential refuse is taken to
a recycling center located northeast of Tulare for removal of recyclables
from the waste stream. Also taken to various processing facilities
is a "dry route" from the commercial pick-ups that has
been identified as having a large amount of recyclables in the waste.
Other commercial routes continue to dispose of collected materials
at the county owned landfill nine miles southeast of Tulare. The
Solid Waste service operates under the direction of the Board of
Public Utilities. This division is also responsible for street sweeping
operations which, like solid waste collection, contributes to the
overall cleanliness and sanitary condition of this city.
